Open verdict after Doncaster diabetic dies

NEWS: News.

NEWS: News.

A DIABETIC found dead at his Doncaster home may have taken his own life - but because doctors were unable to establish how, an open verdict was recorded at an inquest.

An apparent suicide note was found near Mark Monaghan’s body but the autopsy showed no evidence of an overdose of insulin and the level of alcohol was not fatal.

Members of the 43-year-old’s family do not believe he planned to kill himself because there was a joint of beef ready for his Sunday dinner.

But a neighbour described him as ‘distraught’ the last time he saw him near his home in New Park Estate, Stainforth, last July.

Mr Monaghan, a rail worker, was diabetic since age of 19 but it was not always controlled because of his ‘erratic’ lifestyle. Older sister Jean Merchant discovered his body in his bedroom and a police officer recovered the note from the bedside.

Pathologist Anju Verghese said death was due to him breathing-in broncho-pneumonia fluid, but could not find the underlying cause.

Assistant Coroner Geoffrey Saul said: “On one hand we have a note which appears to indicate suicidal intent, but I have really nothing else to support that. Although it’s possible he did it intentionally, I cannot be positive.”
