TEEN heart throb Louis Tomlinson may have auditioned as a solo artist for the X Factor, but went on to become one-fifth of record breaking band One Direction.

But now the former Hall Cross pupils has said he is glad Simon Cowell decided to make him part of One Direction as he claims he wouldn’t be able to “hack” life as a soloist.

His revelation comes as the boyband, which also includes Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik, prepare to kick off an American tour tonight, starting in Connecticut.

Twenty-year-old Louis, told Radio Live New Zealand: “This would be such a different story if we were solo artists.”

“I don’t know if me personally if I’d be able to hack it if I was a solo artist – it’s a lot of time away from home.

“But to have the other guys there with you is really nice and makes everything so much more fun.”

The X Factor finalists were given a warm send of from Heathrow airport yesterday with crowds of fans trying to get a glimpse of their idols.

But whilst Stateside the boys will have to be more careful on how they communicate with family, friends and family back home after reportedly racking up £2,500 phone bills each on their last tour by phoning, texting, using Twitter, Facebook and the iPhone app Draw Something according to national newspapers.
