OLYMPIC fever reached Swinton Community School recently, when the Rotherham Olympic torch was welcomed and cheered as it passed through on its way to St Pius RC School at Wath. Jorge Elkin and Billie-Joe Harris did the honours for Swinton, after the torch had visited all primary schools in the area.

Geography students from the school have visited London to enjoy a tour of the Olympic village. This was combined with a Thames river cruise, a ride on the London Eye, and shopping in Covent Garden. A school spokeswoman said: “All of this and the regeneration of London’s East End plus aspects of tourism gave them valuable first hand knowledge for case studies needed for their exams. All students found the two-day tour a valuable experience.”

Other students, from AS biology, took part in a residential field trip to Scarborough and studied varied habitats along the rocky shore.

For some lucky students recent ventures have included an organised tour to Barcelona, staying in the coastal resort of Salou. They went to attractions such as Antoni Gaudi’s famous unfinished cathedral ‘La Sagrada Familia’, Parc Guell and the Nou Camp (FC Barcelona’s football stadium). They took a stroll down the city’s famous boulevard ‘Las Ramblas’ and spent a day at Port Aventura.

And during half term, a total of 55 Y9, Y10 and Y11 students had the opportunity to visit Paris. Over four days they enjoyed a Seine river boat cruise, a trip up the Eiffel Tower and a day at Disneyland. The final morning was spent at the Palace of Versailles.

There was an emotional end of term party for Y11 students, which took place prior to examination leave. The event included a buffet, a film show of their school life from Y7 to Y11 and a rewards ceremony. A staff spokeswoman said: “We would like to wish all students the very best of luck for their forthcoming exams and say: “bring on the Prom!”
