Odeon's final hurrah as building crumbles
DEMOLITION teams have succeeded where top music acts failed - by raising the roof of Doncaster's Odeon.
Work by GMB Demolition to bulldoze the landmark building in Hall Gate has rapidly progressed after a 200,000 specialist machine was brought in to raze the building to the ground.
The state-of-the-art 35 metre high telescopic boom, one of only three of its type in the country, has seen large parts of the Art Deco building disappear in days.
Simon Grantham, director of GMB, said: "We're delighted to have this new equipment and are eager to see the full extent of its capabilities at first hand at our Doncaster demolition site."
During the 1950s and 60s top acts such as Buddy Holly and The Beatles played at the former cinema which was built in 1934 and closed last year.
The building is expected to be demolished by Christmas.
Doncaster-based developer Lazarus Properties is building a 10 million leisure complex on the site which includes a casino, gym, shops and offices.
The frieze on the front of the building will be retained.
