Nurses refuse to swap unit

NURSES who care for sick Dearne kids at the Leeds General Infirmary say they would refuse to move should children’s heart surgery there close.

In a survey of 50 nurses on the paediatric cardio-thoracic ward and children’s cardiac intensive care unit, 98 per cent said family commitments, financial constraints and travel distance would make them unprepared to move.

The NHS Safe and Sustainable review into children’s heart surgery provision in the UK stated in July that surgery at Leeds would end, leaving families to travel to centres in Newcastle, Liverpool and Birmingham for surgery.

Nursing staff on the ward make up a gold standard team with a combined experience of 467 years. There is a risk of this network breaking down. Sharon Cheng, Children’s Heart Surgery Fund Director, said: “We’re fully committed to saving children’s heart surgery in Leeds.”
