No improvements made to avoid flooding - say Toll Bar residents
ANGRY flood victims claim they have seen no improvements to avoid further flooding despite Doncaster Council saying it has spent £14million improving defences.
Residents crammed into Toll Bar Primary School for a special meeting in which they had the opportunity to question officials from the council, emergency services, Environment Agency and Yorkshire Water.
During a special meeting of the local authority's overview and scrutiny committee residents submitted written questions to officials.
Villagers who privately owned properties questioned the lack of help they received during the devastating floods of 2007 which saw 3,000 residents evacuated from 3,286 homes.
A submitted question read: "When we were flooded out, the first thing we were asked by the local authorities was whether we had private or council-owned homes and if we were private they said 'We can't help you'."
However, residents were not assured the town could cope if the same amount of downpours happened again despite the meeting being told the council had spent 13.9million on improvements including recovery centres, helplines and neighbourhood teams.
Jane Miller the council's director of neighbourhoods and communities Jane Miller said: "If we experience the same kind of heavy rain like 2007, we will still flood but we are now better prepared for it."
