Nightclub scheme set to create jobs

NEWS: News.

NEWS: News.

PLANS are being drawn up to open another nightclub on Cleveland Street in Doncaster town centre.

The scheme would see a bar called Society opening up in the former Jessops photographic shop site.

It would initially create around 12 jobs, with the prospect of more if it is successful.

Doncaster councillors sitting on the licensing committee have given support to the scheme, granting its drinks licence.

It also would allow the venue to have live music acts from 9pm until 6am.

But it would still require planning permission before it can open.

Doncaster businessman Andrew Roberts, who is behind the scheme, estimated the bar would open in between 12 and 14 weeks if his application for planning permission was straightforward.

He said: “I’m looking to create something for people aged around 25 to 40 who want somewhere they can have a nice drink.

“Music will be there, but the plan is that the music will add to the environment, rather than dominate it.

“We want it to be a nice, safe environment.”

The plans outlined to members of the licensing committee at the Doncaster Civic Offices this week described the club as a small, intimate nightclub over the ground floor and the first floor of the building.

The ground floor would be one room with the bar room and toilets.

The first floor would be a smaller area with a separate bar section.

Police had objected to the plans for a 6am licence, and had sent a representation to the licensing committee outlining their concerns.

The police statement said the force was concerned about customers leaving the premises at 6.15am, potentially leading to an increase in crime and disorder in the area.

Cleveland Street is among the busiest areas in Doncaster in terms of the night-time economy, with a number of pubs and clubs already in operation there, including Baileys, Urban and Cask Corner.
