Mum's Plea To Find Accident Driver

THE mother of a teenage girl seriously injured in a hit and run accident has released a heartbreaking photograph of her daughter in a bid to find the driver.

Rebecca Jones, 15, was waiting for a bus in Church Road in Stainforth at about 8pm on December 20 when she was hit by a green Vauxhall Vectra.

The driver and passengers in the car then ran away, leaving Rebecca with life threatening head injuries.

Today Rebecca's mother, Samantha Bowman has released a photograph of her critically ill daughter in her bed in Sheffield Children's Hospital in the hope of tracking down the people responsible.

" All she was doing was waiting for the bus to go to Hatfield with her friends, doing nothing wrong," Ms Bowman said, "I don't understand how anybody could be so cruel, to just run off and leave her.

"Somebody knows who the driver was and we need them to come forward. We know it might be hard but look what they've done.

"We are keeping a round the clock vigil at Becky's bedside watching and waiting for any sign of improvement. Becky was just so bubbly and funny, 'the joker in the pack'. She loves her music and being with her friends.

"She has been successful in achieving a place at Scunthorpe College and was looking forwards to studying business and travel together with Spanish. We were looking forward to Christmas dinner with her and her family and she was looking forward to spending her Christmas money on Boxing day."

This morning Rebecca's condition was described as critical but stable.

Police investigating the incident have asked for anyone who may have seen the incident to come forward with information to identify the driver.

Temporary Inspector Steve Askham said: "We will deal with all contacts in confidence. I believe that a village community such as Stainforth will be appalled at what has happened and the fact that all the occupants, in particular the driver of the car, appear to have immediately run from the scene.

"I am confident that the identity of the driver is known and I appeal to those people to come forward and do the right thing. I also appeal to the driver to contact my team and end the constant need to be looking over their shoulder."

Anyone with information should call the investigation team directly on 0114 2202970 and anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

*Police have arrested and bailed three men on suspicion of drink driving offences and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.
