MP apologises for swearing at march

ROTHERHAM MP Denis MacShane has apologised for swearing on a megaphone during a counter-demonstration against a march by the English Defence League (EDL).

The Labour politician used foul language at the Unite Against Fascism rally in Rotherham town centre on Saturday. The event took place at the same time as a demonstration of about 300 supporters of the far right EDL.

The MP apologised after Rawmarsh man, Barry Payling, complained to police and Rotherham Council.

Mr Payling, who was showing friends from Australia around the town, said: “He could have provoked the EDL and caused serious trouble.”

A spokesman for Mr MacShane said: “He apologises to the visitors who took offence and would be happy to take them around the House of Commons to make up for it.”

Police arrested three men. One for a public order offence, a second on suspicion of affray and another on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.
