Mexborough doctor’s porn on the job scandal

NEWS: News.

NEWS: News.

A FAMILY doctor based in Mexborough has been rapped by health watchdogs, after he was caught viewing porn while at work.

Dr Viswanadham Venkata Sastry, who is based at the New Surgery in Adwick Road, has received a formal warning from the GMC (General Medical Council), after he was found to have ‘misused the surgery’s computer equipment to access adult pornographic material.’

But the matter was not considered so serious that it should affect his current working status.

The warning is recorded on his registration details in GMC records and on its website where it states: “This conduct does not meet with the standards required of a doctor.

“It risks bringing the profession in to disrepute and it must not be repeated.”

And it goes on to explain to doctors that ‘you must make sure that your conduct at all times justifies your patients’ trust in you and the public’s trust in the profession.’

The GMC decided that the ‘failing’ was not so serious as to require any restriction on Dr Sastry’s registration.

But it added that it was deemed necessary to issue a formal warning.

The allegations presented to the GMC were that Dr Sastry had accessed adult pornographic material while at work, between the months of May and June in 2011.

A GMC spokesman said: “I can confirm that this doctor did not face a fitness to practice hearing in December.

He added: “He is currently GMC registered and has a warning on his fitness to practice.”

The family GP lives in Sprotbrough, and is also a long-standing director of the Happy Children Nursery based in Adwick Road, Mexborough.

When the Times contacted the New Surgery about the GMC warning, practice manager Debi Gillott said that it was aware of the matter concerning Dr Sastry.

But she said he did not want to comment on the case.

The New Surgery is a family practice with four doctors, three nurses and one manager.

It runs a number of clinics and a range of services including minor surgery, children’s health and young people’s health, asthma and diabetes treatment and family planning.

Its website says: “The doctors and staff at The New Surgery in Mexborough are proud to offer the highest standard of patient-centred healthcare.

“We run many clinics for the management of chronic diseases such as asthma and diabetes and offer a wide variety of other medical services including antenatal and postnatal care, minor surgery, childhood vaccinations and well-person check-ups.”
