Mayor in Gay Pride funding U-turn
DONCASTER'S new mayor has performed a U-turn over plans to cut funding for the borough's Gay Pride festival.
Peter Davies has agreed that the council will give the 3,000 it had earmarked to help fund this year's festival following talks with organisers.
Following his election as the English Democrats candidate Mr Davies said the council would no longer fund events such as Gay Pride, International Women's Day and Black History Month.
However, Mr Davies said the authority would honour its commitment to fund this year's event.
He said: "The Gay Pride event has been planned for some time and the funding already committed. In the circumstances, I believe I should honour this commitment and the event will go ahead. I will continue to work with the pride committee.
"My main concern for my term is that we get value for money from public spend on quality front line services."
A statement from the Doncaster Pride committee said is was "very happy" with the decision.
It added: "We have secured the commitment to fund this years event and also to open dialogue to discuss future years events as well as wider LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender) issues, so that we can continue to provide a great day out for pride as well as give our community a voice on important issues."
Doncaster Pride will take place on August 16.
