An ENGLISH Democrats candidate standing for Doncaster’s Mayoral election has confirmed his party has ex-BNP members - after mayor Peter Davies quit the party saying its ranks were being infiltrated by the far right group.
David Allen, who has thrown his hat into the ring for the forthcoming May poll, admitted some party members had previously been members of the British National Party.
His admission comes just weeks after Mr Davies sensationally walked out on the English Democrats, blaming his decision on the party ‘hoovering up’ BNP members.
Mr Allen said: “To be honest, the majority of people in the party are lapsed Tories. But some have come across from the BNP and I’m aware of the taint the BNP has had.
“But providing they behave themselves and subscribe to what we believe in, I don’t see a problem.”
Doncaster born-and-bred Mr Allen, 46, stood for the English Democrats as the party’s South Yorkshire Police Commissioner candidate and came second in the first preference votes.
His election agent was former BNP member Ian Sutton, who lives in Barnsley, but for the forthcoming mayoral contest he will have John Brennan as his right-hand man. Mr Allen added: “I think it was a convenient excuse for Peter and I think he’d made up his mind a long time ago he was going to quit. Although I have great personal respect for Peter, he subscribes to himself and no-one else, and certainly not the party.”
Robin Tilbrook, chairman of the English Democrats, said: “I am delighted to welcome David Allen as our candidate for the Doncaster mayoralty. I believe he will make an excellent candidate. He did a very good job as a candidate in the Police Commissioner elections.
“I expect the election will be decided on second preference votes and it is on these we have a clear lead over Labour. David is well qualified to be a very good mayor and being locally born and bred is justifiably proud of his home town.”
Seven candidates have so far confirmed they will be standing in the contest.
