Manvers waste project moves on

INFRASTRUCTURE group Balfour Beatty has been awarded a £34 million contract to build part of the new Mechanical Biological Treatment plant at Manvers.

The plans, put together by consultants Mouchel, for 3SE - a partnership between Shanks Group plc and SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy plc) are for 20,500 square metres of buildings on mostly brownfield land that was part of the former Manvers Colliery spoil tip and coke works.

Around 11 per cent of the build will be on green belt land, to include an intelligent transfer station, anaerobic digestion buildings, an administration and visitor centre, a workshop, weighbridge and a gatehouse.

Up to 265,000 tonnes of household and some commercial waste will be treated each year from Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham boroughs. Planning permission for the unit, to be completed by 2014, was granted recently by Rotherham Council.
