Laura’s Tanzanian mountain adventure
Naomi Handford of Sheffield and Laura Wright of Goldthorpe, who are to climb Kilimanjaro.
FOR her work placement during a university course, student nurse Laura Wright of Goldthorpe is going the extra mile....
In fact, she’s going hundreds of extra miles, to join staff at a Tanzanian hospital and learn how they cope with their every day medical challenges.
Then after three weeks working in both the intensive care and emergency departments at the busy hospital, she has another major goal in mind.
Along with her friend Naomi Handford from Sheffield Hallam University, Laura, 20, will tackle the trek up Mount Kilimanjaro over six days, to raise funds for Help for Heroes.
The girls know that around 20 per cent of all adventurers who attempt to make it up Kilimanjaro fail to make the climb.
Laura, a former Dearne Valley College public services student who hopes ultimately to join the RAF said: “The opportunity to do this presented itself so I jumped at it. I’ve done expeditions in this country so I do know basically what I’m doing. This will be a bit different I know, but we’re determined and we’ll be well prepared.
“It’s exciting. My work placement is with Work the World, and is in a coastal location. But I’m told the nurses at the hospital there have much more responsibility than they do here, so I’ll need to be fit for my time working there as well as for Kilimanjaro.”
Laura will fly off on her summer adventure on July 14, and will attempt the climb from August 6.
On April 20 there will be a raffle at the Bluebell, Manvers, to support her cause, with tickets being sold at Interiors and at Angel Cakes, Mexborough.
