It's a wrap
MARKING pens have been swapped for knitting needles at a primary school as teachers get crafty to knit woollies.
Staff at Owston Park Primary have knitted a staggering 200 blankets, hats, scarves and pairs of gloves to send to people in Hungary, Romania and the Ukraine as part of a Salvation Army appeal.
Sue Attenborough, a learning support assistant at the Lodge Road school, said: "We've done the Shoebox Appeal before and I just happened to put in a few hats and things I had knitted. The people collecting them seemed to like that idea and suggested that we make more.
"I've been rounding up colleagues and we've been sending out letters to parents for them to help. Christine Carter has been emailing shops and they have been donating wool squares to us too. We're really impressed with the response.
"So far we have knitted 150 hats, some scarves and gloves and around six or seven blankets.
"We're hoping that once the children complete their SATs they can get involved too, because a lot of them have been asking about it and are really interested to know more.
"It has been a great way of bringing everyone together and it is something different for us to take part in."
Staff and parents are continuing to knit clothing for the Salvation Army's next collection in November. If people would like to donate wool or help in any way, call the school on 01302 722271.
