AN Isle farmer’s 16-year battle to find spitfires buried in Burma could be near to an end after he was given the go-ahead to dig up the historic aircraft.

David Cundall, 62, of Sandtoft, has finally sealed a deal for permission to recover the lost RAF planes after Prime Minister David Cameron reached an agreement with Burma president, Thein Sein.

The British Embassy in Rangoon said that it was a chance for the new Burmese government “in uncovering, restoring, displaying these fighter planes”.

Mr Cundall has visited Burma 12 times, determined to find them. The first step was to place advertisements in magazines, trying to find soldiers who buried Spitfires.
