Info is needed for book on poet’s early years

AN AUTHOR is appealing for people who grew up with Ted Hughes to come forward and contribute to a book about the former poet laureate’s childhood years in Mexborough.

Steve Ely is penning a book about Hughes’ early life living in Mexborough from 1938 to 1951.

The 47-year-old Upton man said the significance of his formative years in the town is not largely recognised in biographical work.

Mr Ely hopes to explore how his early years influenced his work in a book entitled Ted Hughes South Yorkshire.

He said: “I need help in finding local people who knew Hughes during his Mexborough period and who may have memories, anedotes, photographs and perhaps documents relating to him.”

He can be contacted at steveely@btinternet.com
