Improvement needed at Don Valley School

NEWS: News.

NEWS: News.

ONE of Doncaster’s biggest secondary schools has been told to improve – after a visit by education inspectors.

Don Valley Academy and Performing Arts College was told it requires improvement across all areas after the two-day Ofsted inspection in December.

Pupils’ achievement, quality of teaching, the behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management all came under fire in the report.

The study said: “Teaching is not consistently good enough to result in students’ good progress throughout the academy. Too many lessons are not planned carefully enough to match students’ needs and aspirations. Too many teachers do not check sufficiently students’ learning.”

Inspectors also noted that while achievement is improving, high-attaining students and those with disabilities and special educational needs are not making enough progress. Standards in English, mathematics and science are still below average.

It also said some students do not have a positive attitude to learning and that although recent changes to senior and middle leadership have been necessary, they have hindered improvements in some areas.

It added that the Scawthorpe academy’s evaluation of its work was “largely accurate, albeit a little overgenerous”.

However, the school also won praise in a number of areas, including its welcoming atmosphere and Ofsted said that students were friendly and polite.

Standards are rising, particularly in English and maths and sixth form students attain average standards overall. Good teaching ensures that many make good progress and are well prepared for the future.

The school will be inspected again within 24 months.
