POLICE face a ‘tough tusk’ in tracing five elephants who disappeared in a silent stampede from their Goldthorpe home.

The mini-herd of costly leather elephants, all about five to six feet tall, were stolen from a town centre business over the weekend.

Attendees at a Goldthorpe crime and safety meeting on Monday evening this week were asked to keep a look out for the missing herd, that the thieves may try to dispose of either together or singly.

A Dearne SNT spokesman said: “The elephants would be hard to miss as they’re massive, and quite distinctive.

“If anyone knows anything about them or where they might be, we’d be pleased to receive information.”

The town has been plagued in recent weeks by thefts from commercial premises and house burglaries that generally occur around dusk.

Anyone with information about the stolen elephants or other crimes should contact South Yorkshire Police on the 101 number.
