Hire car crash almost ends in jail for Doncaster man

A YOUNG Doncaster man who smashed his friend’s hire car into a tree when he drove it without permission has a suspended prison sentence hanging over him.

Arron David Sanders was disqualified from driving from a previous offence and his mate specifically told him not to drive it when he left the Ford Focus parked outside the defendant’s house in Penistone Street.

But the 20-year-old could not resist the temptation and went for a spin that ended with him crashing the 09-registered car in Beckett Road, Wheatley on December 29.

Sanders, aged 20, pleaded guilty to offences of aggravated vehicle taking and driving while disqualified and was sentenced by Doncaster magistrates to 12 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, and attendance at a Thinking Skills programme.

Prosecutor Kath Ashton said the £4,500 car was a write off. When arrested Sanders said ‘he had decided to take it to his friend’s address but had to avoid a collison and hit some tree. he had no permission to drive the car’.

Defence solicitor Jason Newall said Sanders’s partner was 17 weeks pregnant ‘so he has a lot of positive things to aim for’ and his personal background enabled the bench to suspend the sentence.
