Have your say on plan to change benefits

RESIDENTS in Mexborough, Conisbrough and Denaby are being asked to give their views on changes to the benefits scheme which will see people losing vital cash support.

The Government is abolishing the current national Council Tax Benefit scheme from April 1, 2013, and has decided that it should be replaced with a local scheme in each council area.

But while the Government currently meets the whole cost of council tax support, it will pay Doncaster Council only around 90 per cent of the expected cost.

The authority will be left with a funding shortfall of over £3 million which will come from working age benefit claimants and owners of empty and second homes.

Pension age residents will be protected from the changes.

A consultation asking for people’s views on the proposals was launched on Monday and it will run until Friday, November 30.

A community consultation event has been organised to take place at Mexborough Market on November 3 from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
