Green light for property pit site proposal

PLANS to build more than 1,000 new homes on a former pit site have been given the go-ahead.
Doncaster Council approved the application from Harworth Estates to build 1,200 homes, a food store, hotel, pub restaurant and land for a school as well as the promise of creating jobs at the old Rossington Colliery site in West End Lane.
Work on the project is expected to start after the link road between FARRRS and West End Lane opens in 2014, with the shop and pub first on the list to be constructed.
It is the final scheme to be approved which, along with Helios Inland Port and Peel’s development at Finningley, provides funding towards the construction of the FARRRS road link to Robin Hood Airport.
Rossington Colliery closed in 2007.
Adrian Spawforth, project designer and managing director of Spawforths the consultants on the project, said the plan was a “significant design challenge”.
He added: “Achieving a scheme that was also market facing in this economic climate has made that challenge even more complicated. However, it is a credit to the teams, officers, councillors, and community representatives who have supported the scheme over the last year that even in these challenging times, where there is a will to make things happen, things that are truly transformational can still be achieved.”
Tim Love, director at Harworth Estates, said: “This planning consent will complement the Helios employment development by providing new homes next to new jobs. There will be construction-related employment opportunities for the next 10-15 years as the development is built.
“The housing supports the continued regeneration of Rossington and meets the requirements of Doncaster Council’s plans for this area. The settlement will not only benefit from the new homes, but also a new food store, hotel, pub restaurant and land for a new primary school. There will also be a new children’s play area and access to further areas of public open space.
“Recycoal has commenced work to wash the former spoil heap which will be re-modelled and restored to provide further areas of open space which will be accessible to the community and provide a much-improved backdrop to the new housing development.
“We expect construction of the first phase of the new homes to begin once the spoil heap work is close to completion and the link road is built, sometime around 2015.”
