COMMUNITY groups across Mexborough are being urged to apply for grants to get projects aimed at improving their neighbourhoods off the ground.
Mexborough Community Partnership has been awarded around £8,000 from the Community Development Foundation to distribute to worthy groups across the town.
Organisations such as neighbourhood watch schemes and tenants’ and residents’ associations can apply for grants between £250 and £2,500.
Christine Spence, a director at Mexborough Community Partnership, urged community leaders to come forward and apply for the money.
The 60-year-old, of Church Street, Mexborough, said: “Funding streams like this are vitally important to communities in these economic times.
“It was the case a few years ago that many funding pots were available but times have changed so we have to take advantage of any money that we get.
“Some of the grants may seem small but they can go a long way. Even with £250 you would be surprised what you can do with it to improve your community.”
The scheme is part of a four year plan, and a number of groups took advantage of the first batch of money released last year.
One town neighbourhood watch scheme used the money to buy a mobile CCTV camera as a way to combat anti-social behaviour, while another funding package went to a community allotment scheme.
Mrs Spence added: “We don’t want the money to be just sitting there so we need people to come forward and apply for grants.
“The money is only available to voluntary groups, and not organisations such as the police and schools. But obviously groups who get the money can work with any organisation they see as being suitable.
“All they have to do is say a little about themselves and what they intend to use the money for.
