Glimmer of hope for Denaby’s old library

Denaby residents have welcomed a judge’s decision which means the village library could be reopened in the future.

A disabled campaigner battling to save Doncaster’s libraries has been given a fresh glimmer of hope in her fight, after a top judge revived her legal challenge.

Carol Buck went to court against Mayor of Doncaster Peter Davies following a decision taken in 2011 to close two of the town’s libraries - with a further 12 being staffed by volunteers.

Last August Doncaster Council claimed victory in a judicial review into a decision not to put cash into reopening closed libraries in Denaby and Carcroft.

Now, in a court case that has already cost Doncaster taxpayers £30,000, Ms Buck has been given leave to appeal the decision.

If she is successful, the Court of Appeal will have the power to quash the mayor’s decision and restore previous council-funded library services.

The decision means that a full appeal hearing will now take place in the Court of Appeal before June this year.

Fran Rhodes of Denaby Tenants’ and Residents’ Association said: “I would very much support the campaign to reopen the library. It was a point of contact for people in the community, being situated next to the doctors and a much-missed facility.

“Youngsters used it to access the computers as well as for homework and reading.”
