From scary fairies to cheeky cherubs!
THE spirit of Christmas was well and truly spread around Askern this festive season thanks to a number of events involving local schools.
A big 'thank you' to those who supported Moss Road
A Christingle service at St Peters Church in Askern helped pupils of Moss Road Infant School celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, said headteacher Suzie Darrell.
The event centres on the lighting of a candle -representing God's light – placed in an orange which stands for the world.
Children also enjoyed preparing for the school's Christmas Fayre, which brought in almost 900. The profits will be used to pay for visiting specialists to enrich the learning experience, along with extra equipment for the garden area and playground.
Ms Darrell said: "I want to say a big thank you to all the parents, families and other members of the community who supported us. To raise so much money at a time when things are difficult for families is really fantastic."
Pupils had worked hard on craft items to sell, such as tree decorations, and visitors to the fayre also had the chance to take part in a wide variety of games and stalls.
Other traditional Christmas treats at the school included a concert with a nativity performance, and a rendition of songs from Christmas
through the ages.
Children spread spirit of Christmas
'WHOOPS-a-daisy Angel' was the title of this year's Christmas performance at Littlemoor Children's Centre and School.
It told the tale of a careless cherub who becomes the heroine among her host when she finds out about the birth of Jesus.
The lead role was taken by Phoebe Wood, whose 'dirty' face and lop-sided halo proved to be no barrier to her success!
The play was performed for parents, and staged again for members of the Askarne Day Centre.
The elderly clients of the Day Centre are invited into school each year for a Christmas presentation, and treated to coffee and mince pies by the governors.
Deputy head Mrs Carol Anne Turner said the play had been a big hit with the visitors who had said the school event always marks the start of their Christmas.
A frenzy of fairy tale friends
THERE were Red Hot Goblins, Scary Fairies, Princes and Witchy Girls on stage at Askern Spa Juniors, when Year 4 put on their panto with a difference.
The play was entitled Friends Reunited, and centred around the tale of Sleeping Beauty – and what might have happened after she woke up.
The cast included many traditional fairy tale characters – with a few new ones thrown in for good measure.
Parents and friends of the school enjoyed the colourful comedy which was staged in the final week of the Christmas term.
