Final show at Odeon

THE curtain has finally come down on Doncaster's Odeon cinema.

The few people were turned out for the final show - of an American teen drama called "Never Back Down" - was in stark contrast to the hundreds who used to flock there in its 60s hey-day.

The Friends of Doncaster Odeon now hope the Art Deco-fronted cinema - which started life 70 years ago as the Gaumont - can be listed and transformed into a performance venue.

Group member Ray Nortrop said: "If we can be successful in getting the building listed the wish would be for Doncaster Council to take it on and make it the new performance venue rather than the new theatre."

The Hallgate building has been bought by Doncaster-based developers Lazarus Properties which has no immediate plans for it.
