Fake wine and cigarette seizures from Doncaster shops revealed

OVER 100 bottles of fake wine and nearly 600 packets of counterfeit cigarettes have been seized by trading standards officers from shops in Doncaster.

The seizures have been made over the last 18 months, Doncaster Council has revealed as it launches a campaign to stop retails from supplying illegal cigarettes and alcohol by signing up to a scheme that deters cold callers.

The ‘Fight the Fakes’ campaign encourages off licences to display window stickers to discourage suppliers of illegal cigarettes and alcohol from calling at their premises and also contains advice on how to avoid stocking counterfeit goods.

Deputy Mayor, Coun Cynthia Ransome, said: “Doncaster Council is keen to stamp out sales of illegal tobacco and alcohol. We take the matter very seriously and have introduced this initiative to deter those who try to sell these products door to door. “Businesses should ensure they purchase goods from traceable and reputable wholesalers and not be tempted to buy from people where there is a suspicion that the goods may be counterfeit.”

Danum News on High Street, Doncaster is the first shop to sign up to the scheme and owner Jagdeep Singh said: “I feel that it is extremely important to support Doncaster Council, and partners to assist in eradicating the availability of counterfeit and potentially unsafe products, so that my customers can be confident in the quality and safety of the products that we sell.”

Residents are reminded that drinking fake alcohol can be harmful even if consumed within the recommended limits. Side effects can include nausea, vomiting, dizziness and in extreme circumstances have been known to induce comas.

If retailers are approached by cold callers and suspect that goods may be fake they are being encouraged to contact Trading Standards. Similarly residents who have any concerns about counterfeit cigarettes and alcohol should contact Doncaster Council on 01302 736000.
