A SON of Doncaster’s former mayor has appeared in court charged with robbery.

Joss Nathaniel Winter attended Doncaster Magistrates’ Court supported by his dad - ex-elected mayor Martin Winter.

Winter, 18, stands accused of robbing a mobile phone and cash worth £140 from Richard Hughes on October 29.

The teenager, who lives in Lancaster Avenue, Kirk Sandall, stood in court alongside co-accused Ashley Hirst, 19, of Athelstane Crescent, Edenthorpe.

Dressed smartly in suits, the pair only spoke to confirm their names, date of births and addresses.

Mr Winter sat behind them in the public gallery.

After the short hearing Martin Winter told the Free Press: “A lot of families undergo challenges as people grow up.

“But it shouldn’t mean that conclusions are met before anything has been decided.”

Winter was granted bail with conditions including a curfew between 8pm and 7am when he must present himself to a police officer between these times.

He must also live and sleep at his address in Lancaster Avenue.

Hirst was given a curfew of 11pm to 7am, and must present himself to police and remain at Athelstane Crescent.

Following their appearance at Doncaster Magistrates Court, district judge Jonathan Bennett committed the case to Doncaster Crown Court.

Winter appeared in the dock on Friday and his case was adjourned until April for a plea and case management hearing.

Hirst will face trial in May on a joint charge of robbing Mr Hughes.

Mr Winter was the first elected mayor of Doncaster when he was victorious in the 2002 elections.

He was re-elected in 2005. Following a controversial term in office Mr Winter announced in 2009 that he would not be standing for office again.

Since leaving office Mr Winter has kept more of a low profile making only a few appearances in public.
