ROTHERHAM Titans have revealed that a former player has been killed this week in a road accident in Italy.

The club said Brendan Lynch, 26, suffered fatal injuries after he was knocked from his Honda scooter in Rome.

Italian police reportedly said that Mr Lynch’s scooter was hit by another car in the early hours of Monday as he travelled on the Rome ring road near Settebagni just to the north of the capital and the vehicle had then left the scene.

The Rotherham-born man had moved to Rome recently and played for Capitolina, the city’s main rugby club. He also worked for the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation which is based in the Italian capital.

Rotherham Titans Chairman Nick Cragg said: “Clearly we are very upset at the loss of Brendan Lynch.

“Brendan was a key part of our playing squad during our first season at Rotherham Rugby Club.

“More importantly Brendan was a lovely young man, who shared our values and those of our wonderful game. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to Brendan’s family and friends.”

Brendan made five first team appearances for Rotherham Titans, scoring one try during the 2004-05 season.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We were made aware of the death of a British national in Rome on January 28.”
