TWO men have admitted the manslaughter of a married dad in a doorstep shooting in South Yorkshire.

Nathan Wingfield, aged 23, and 30-year-old Stephen Rodgers admitted their involvement as they were about to stand trial accused of murdering Tyron Woodhead outside his home on Doncaster Road, Wath upon Dearne.

The pair, each of no fixed abode, confessed they were two of a three-man gang which planned to rob Mr Woodhead – but claimed they never knew their accomplice was armed with a gun.

A third man was arrested, but never charged.

Wingfield admits to have been carrying a knife at the time, while Rodgers says he was armed with an axe.

The two are to be sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court tomorrow.

The duo struck at 42-year-old Mr Woodhead’s home in September, leaving the married father-of-one fighting for life.

Mr Woodhead, a delivery driver, regained consciousness in hospital, but was never well enough to be interviewed by detectives.

He died in hospital a month after the shooting.

Jonathan Sharp, prosecuting, told the court a ‘scuffle’ had broken out on the doorstep, during which a gun was fired, but Wingfield and Rodgers denied responsibility for the shooting.

The third man could have been carrying the gun used in the attack, he said.

Mr Sharp said: “Over the last couple of weeks, the defendants have shown their hands and we have a somewhat clearer view of what might have happened.

“Effectively, this is a case in which the issue of joint enterprise arises – each defendant accepts going to the house with the foresight some harm would be caused and in these circumstances we would accept pleas to manslaughter.

“There was an intention to rob, and each of the defendants was armed.”

In addition to admitting manslaughter, Wingfield also admitted a robbery committed a week before, during which cash and a Peugeot 207 were stolen.
