A DONCASTER mum has told of her delight after hearing campaigners have won a legal challenge over plans to save the heart centre where her daughter is to have major surgery in the next few days.

The High Court upheld a legal challenge from campaigners attempting to stop the closure of the children’s heart unit at Leeds General Hospital.

Kerry Singleton’s daughter Sienna, aged six, is due to have her latest operation at the Leeds unit any day, as she is at the top of a waiting list.

She is due to have a 17 to 24 hours of surgery to her heart, which has fewer ventricles than it should. It will allow her body to work with half a heart.

It will be her third operation at Leeds, and she will have to have more operations as she grows up.

Kerry, from Shildon Grove, Moorends, said: “I couldn’t stop smiling all day after I heard the news.

“We are hoping that this will lead to Sienna being able to have her future operations in Leeds. It is more like extended family to her there, because she knows the staff personally, and they know her.

“It makes a huge difference to her to have operations in Leeds, and it means I am able to go home to see my other children.

“It is not just her heart surgery. If Sienna has to have a tooth out, or breaks a bone, she has to be treated there, because the doctors need to be available in case they are needed if anything went wrong.”

Mrs Justice Davies is yet to make any orders on the future of the unit, after ruling consultation was flawed. One possibility is that the judge will order fresh consultations, which could throw plans for the reorganisation of children’s heart surgery around the country into delay and disarray.
