Doncaster gay club to open in old church
A FORMER Doncaster church is to become the town's new gay club.
Doncaster Pride confirmed the old Camelot's club in Wood Street, which was built as a church in the 19th century, will open as a gay venue on September 1.
Under the new name of Trinity, the 800 capacity club will be used as a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) venue but will also be open for general use.
Jen Dewsnap, Doncaster Pride vice-chair, said: "The idea is to offer the LGBT community a new home following the closure of the only recognised gay venue. But Trinity is more than this - it's a great venue and we want to encourage everyone to come."
The club boasts a large dance floor with a raised DJ box, lights and visuals and plasma screens.
Camelot's closed several years ago after a drugs bust and a bid to re-open it last year was short lived.
The premises are owned by Lazarus Properties, which has combined with the Pride committee to revamp the club.
Until three months ago, Doncaster's gay community used the Bar NY pub in Market Place but since it closed there has been no specific gay-friendly venue in the town centre.
