WATER levels are continuing to be monitored across the borough which remains on flood alert, Doncaster Council has warned.

The authority, community flood wardens, the police and Environment Agency are all on alert following a number of bridge and road closures across the borough because of the heavy downpours.

Deputy mayor Coun Cynthia Ransome said: “The main concern is surface water and high river levels. Doncaster remains on a flood alert, which means that flooding is possible.

“Sandbags have already been delivered to properties on a priority basis. Council staff are filling hundreds of extra sandbags this evening as a precautionary means to add to the existing several hundred prepared sandbags in stock.

“We are aware of incidents where drivers have ignored road closures. Motorists are reminded not to ignore bridge and road closures as water might be fast flowing and much deeper than expected. Having to rescue drivers trapped in flood water is dangerous and puts the emergency services teams at risk.”
