College is a mine of information
DONCASTER College has a new intake of mining apprentices for the first time in three years.
More than 40 mining apprentices have started at the college working with UK COAL, Hatfield Colliery and Maltby Colliery to become electrical and mechanical engineers of the future.
Michael Neal, the college's course leader for mining engineering, said: "The college has a long and successful history of working closely with the mining industry and these relationships have led to 43 mining apprentices starting training this autumn."
Twenty apprentices will be working at Hatfield Colliery and eight at Maltby Colliery, the remainder will be working in Nottinghamshire and West Yorkshire.
After the initial one year college training, the apprentices will return to the collieries to continue a further year of day release to complete their BTEC National Certificate. This will then be followed by a further two years of working towards an NVQ Level 3 mechanical/electrical maintenance qualification.
Rob Lucas, training and development manager at Powerfuel Mining, Hatfield Colliery, said: "With more than 100m of investment at Hatfield Colliery in new technologies and equipment to secure the long term future, Powerfuel must invest in young people to take the company forward."
Doncaster College runs a host of engineering-based courses. Further details can be obtained by calling 0800 358 7575 or visiting www.don.ac.uk
