TRIBUTES have poured in for a “popular” firefighter and top triathlete who died at the age of 36.

Adrian Wheatley, of Barnby Dun, served for Doncaster’s Green Watch crew since September 1999 after joining the service earlier that year.

The father-of-two fitness fanatic won World Firefighter Games medals and competed at national and international level in triathlon.

His colleagues and former sports team Adwick Triathlon Club led the tributes after Adrian died from a long illness at Doncaster Royal Infirmary on October 3.

Members of Green Watch said: “Adi was a good friend and member of the watch. The news of him passing away has come as a massive blow to the shift.

“We don’t know anybody who disliked Adi, he was a very popular person, nowhere more so than on Green Watch.”

Chf fire officer Jamie Courtney said: “Everyone I speak to says Adi was very popular. On behalf of the service, I express my sincere condolences to his family and friends.”

A statement on Adwick Triathlon Club said ‘Aidy’ was an exceptional and “talented athlete”.

It read: “He won numerous events at home and abroad both nationally and internationally as a firefighter competing in European and World Firefighter games at individual events such as cycling and swimming and also in triathlon.

“He won the Hatfield triathlon event three years in a row and took Adwick Tri Club to national honours at national team relay championships.

“Locally, he competed in duathlons in Sheffield and Scunthorpe and was untouchable in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

“He will be sadly missed by all in the triathlon world as an athlete and friend, we as a club send our thoughts to his family at this time.”
