OUR campaign to encourage people to raise tens of thousands of pounds to help cancer patients across Doncaster has got off to a flying start.
Just a week after teaming up with Macmillan Cancer Support to get 200 people to sign up to the charity’s Woprld Biggest Coffee Morning that target has been reached with an amazing 239 pledging their support.
However, we still want more folk to sign up to take part in the event to ensure the fundraising target of £35,000 is reached and hopefully surpassed.
All the money raised in Doncaster will stay right here in the borough helping cancer patients and will include providing care for patients at St John’s Hospice in Balby.
Amy Hebdon, fundraising manager for Macmillan commented: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to all those who’ve registered to take part in this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.
“The number of people joining in throughout Doncaster is truly incredible. This demonstrates how local people appreciate the Macmillan services across the area and want to give something back. We would love more people to join in and make this year’s coffee morning even bigger. With more people joining in and raising a cuppa for Macmillan will allow us to fund further services to help those affected by cancer.
“It’s an easy event to take part in and anybody can do so; at home, at school, at work or in the community. Each £25 raised could fund a Macmillan Nurse for an hour and £191 could fund a Macmillan Nurse for a day. I urge everyone in Doncaster to help us make this a record breaking year.”
The charity also responds to the financial difficulties encountered by people affected by cancer and their carers.
It funds a benefits helpline and a team of welfare rights advisors who can help people navigate the complex claims system and help with form filling, as well as a small grants programme for people with cancer on low incomes.
While the event traditionally involves people having straightforward coffee mornings, increasingly people are expanding their events to include other fundraising such as raffles, book or brica-brac stalls, wine-tasting evenings, quiz nights, ladies pamper days and family fun days.
The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning day is on September 28.
