BENEFITS claimants were being turned away from Doncaster Jobcentre today as the national civil servants strike hit the borough.

Those arriving at the office on Wood Street found the doors closed and a notice telling them of the closure in the window.

It stated: “We are sorry that due to exceptional circumstances, you may experience some delays in service today.

“We apologise for any inconvenience. The office will be closed 12.30pm until 1.30pm.”

The UK’s largest civil service union, the Public and Commercial Services Union, is taking industrial action over pay and pensions.

Today is the first in a series of protests which are scheduled to last three months.
