staff at a Doncaster care home have been suspended amid allegations of stealing money from a safe.

A spokesman for Doncaster Council, that run Rowena House in Conisbrough, confirmed that ‘interim management arrangements’ were now in place following the incident.

It is unclear how many members of staff have been suspended from the home that specialises in caring for people with dementia and pensioners.

A police spokesman confirmed a report was made to officers of an alleged theft from a care home in Conisbrough.

She added: “Money is believed to have been stolen from a safe and is thought to have taken place between 8am on Friday, March 9, and 8am on Sunday, March 18.

“No arrests have been made and police are investigating.”

When asked for further details of the incident a the council spokesman said the authority could not comment on individual staffing matters.

The home, based in Old Road, includes a unit for the care of people with dementia and a short stay assessment unit which provides rehabilitation for people discharged from hospital.

The last inspection of the home conducted by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) was carried out on March 5.

Inspectors found that of five areas assessed, including standards of staffing, all standards were being met.

As part of the inspection the CQC spoke to a number of patients.

The report stated: “They spoke positively about the care and support they received.

“They told us they liked living in the home and confirmed they were well supported to make choices and decisions about their care.”

The CQC report stated people living in the home, confirmed they felt safe and said they liked the staff who looked after them.

One person told CCQ inspectors: “Very nice staff, they look after me well. Staff assist quickly if anyone needs help.”

Police are continuing to investigate.
