Campsmount putting the CAN in Canada trip!

CAMPSMOUNT Academy footballers have a £20,000 charity goal... to help them take on Canadians, during a dream summer tour of Toronto.

The newly-formed football side has previously played academy sides in Madrid, Barcelona and Milan – and now they must net a cool 20 grand to fund the trip to North America and pay for kit and equipment.

But the group has gotten off to a flyer, and already has 8,000 in the bank from donations, bag-packing and community events – including a

1,000 donation by Bentley firm VH Maintenance.

Making the trip will be 45 boys and girls aged between 12-18, along with eight staff.

Between matches against Canadian sides such as Ajax Soccer Club, North York Hearts and Richmond Hill, the Askern footballers will watch some baseball and visit the CN Tower.

Tour leader Ben Wheeler said: "We are still looking for sponsors and are keen to work with businesses in the short term, with the trip to Canada... and then again in the long time with the football academy."

Mr Wheeler added: "This year, we want the students to have the opportunity to experience something a little special.

"None of the students have been to Canada before – some haven't even ventured abroad yet!"

The group was set up to improve football for boys and girls within the area surrounding Campsmount Technology College.

To make the trip of a lifetime possible, it has to raise 50 per player and 250 for each staff member.

If you think you can help the side reach its target, call the school on (01302) 700474.

* And a charity night at the Spa Central Club put Campsmount kids 1,000 closer to a technology trip Canada.

The race night was organised by the Station and Wallis Anne Lodge Buffaloes, and will help finance students and staff next term.

Andy Cocks of the Spa Club said: "I'd like to voice appreciation from

both ourselves and the Campsmount School.

Thanks go especially to Charlie, of the Askern Hotel, for providing the race equipment and expertise, and Nidge Moody, Derek Honeybone, and Walt Straw for doing the book making".

He added: "We all had a great night... especially me because I won 20!".
