BUSINESS LEADERS BACK CASINO BID

BUSINESS leaders in Doncaster are backing Sheffield's bid to win the licence for the UK's first regional casino.

In a joint move, the Chambers of Commerce and Industry for Doncaster, Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham have all added their voices in submissions to the Government's Casino Advisory Panel (CAP) in support of the city's bid for the 200m investment.

They have been joined by individual business people who are convinced of the economic benefits a regional casino will bring to the region. Both Sheffield and Doncaster Chambers have been invited to present their case in person when the CAP arrives in Sheffield on September 6.

The CAP is visiting Sheffield as one of eight possible locations for the UK's first pilot regional casino. The eight local authorities which have been shortlisted for a regional casino are Blackpool, Brent, Cardiff, Glasgow, Greenwich, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield.

The regional casino is expected to create a total of 2,500 jobs.

Boost

Neville Dearden, Chief Executive of Doncaster Chamber, said: "As a thriving Chamber we represent a large number of businesses from the Doncaster area and can see the potential boost to our businesses that a regional casino in South Yorkshire would bring.

"We believe that a responsible operator in Sheffield would be working closely with our regional airport to boost South Yorkshire's tourism offer and enable us to become a tourism and leisure destination to rivals European competitors.

"It is our view that a regional casino through the jobs, business benefits and tourism strategy will bring people from far and wide to the region and the extra expenditure by these visitors will be directly into all our businesses in this area."
