Bright young things
A PRIMARY school has become a leading light in renewable energy after switching on more than 20 solar panels.
Saltersgate Junior School, Scawsby, received 20,000 of funding for the panels which will power the school and help teach youngsters about green energy.
The Co-operative Group's Energy for Schools scheme donated 10,000 for the equipment which was matched by the Government's Low Carbon Building Programme.
Youngsters at the school were joined by the Co-operative's climate change character Sunny Solar as the 24 panels were switched on.
The solar panels will generate around 3,300 kilowatts of electricity a year - enough to power a school computer for 33,000 hours or make 180,000 cups of tea for thirsty teachers.
Pupils will also be able to keep track of how much renewable energy the panels are generating and the amount of carbon dioxide they have saved by checking a monitor in the school.
Saltersgate is one of 80 schools in the UK to receive funding as part of the Co-operative's scheme.
