A WOMAN and two girls aged one and two had a lucky escape after a major fire broke out this morning.

The 54-year-old woman managed to escape with the two children following the blaze in Church Lane, Finningley, after she spotted flames coming from the kitchen at about 10am.

Firefighters from Doncaster, Thorne and Edlington tackled the fire wearing breathing apparatus, and a combined aerial rescue pump (CARP) was used to fight the fire from outside the detached bungalow.

A number of neighbouring properties were also evacuated, and police closed part of Doncaster Road and Church Lane. Both have now re-opened.

Watch manager Daz Johnson said: “The property was well alight when we arrived, and although we worked quickly to tackle the flames the fire has destroyed all of the roof space and there is water damage throughout the bungalow.”

The woman was taken to hospital after suffering a slight burn to her arm but is now back home. Both children were unharmed and did not attend hospital.”

Firefighters remained at the scene until after 3pm. The fire is believed to have started accidentally in the kitchen, although the exact cause has yet to be identified.
