A 46-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of trying to lure a child away in his car.

The incident happened in Mutual Street, Hexthorpe, as the seven-year-old girl was riding her bike near her home.

Police say that the man, who was not known to her, approached her and asked her to get into his car, understood to be a green or turquoise estate car. The girl refused and ran home. The man is believed to have followed her and stood outside her home.

Officers, who have only just released details, are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened at 5.30pm on Friday, September, to come forward.

The man, from Sheffield, was arrested and bailed pending further enquiries.

DI Rich Partridge said: “This does appear to be an isolated incident, however parents should be aware and encourage their children how to stay safe. The young girl is quite shaken but she responded correctly by disregarding the man and returning straight home.

“I would urge anyone with information regarding this incident, or any similar incident in Doncaster, particular the Hexthorpe area, or in South Yorkshire, to please come forward to assist with the investigation.”

Anyone with information should contact the police on 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111, quoting incident number 927 of 21/09/2012.
