Backing for MP’s call over NHS complaints

An MP’s call to change the NHS complaints process, using the case of a Goldthorpe toddler, has been backed by a Commons committee.
Two-year old Vinny Duggan has a rare combination of heart and lung problems, plus brain damage, and is unlikely to ever be able to speak.
His parents Andrew and Andrea Duggan felt important evidence about his care in hospital was overlooked by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
On Vinny’s behalf, Dearne MP John Healey urged reform of the NMC at a Parliament debate, and now the Health Select Committee has agreed with him that the Government should ‘amend the rules’ as soon as possible.
A committee report said: “We consider that the inability of the NMC to review its own initial decisions is a significant gap in its powers.”
