Apprentice cop initiative

Young people in the Isle of Axholme who fancy joining the police force can now apply for an apprenticeship.

Humberside Police has launched the first apprenticeship in the history of the force.

It and Hull-based firm Houlton are working together as part of an initiative which aims to put something back into the community across the area. It involves external companies bidding for contracts with public bodies. Candidates undertook suitability tests and six young people were shortlisted.

The chief constable of Humberside Police, Tim Hollis, said: “We are a large employer locally, employing about 4,000 people across the Humberside area so this gives us another opportunity to give something back.

“Young people will be given the chance to work alongside police officers and develop skills which will support them when they go into further employment elsewhere.”

Future apprenticeships will be advertised on the Yorkshire and Humber Training Agency website.

Among the first intake was Luke Kennedy, 21, from Hull. He will work in the force’s community safety unit to develop and build on youth engagement.

He will undertake the apprenticeship over two years, and also attend Hull College to gain a youth work qualification.
