AROUND 40 per cent of patients admitted to A&E are there because of alcohol-related injuries or illnesses, according to new figures.
NHS Doncaster revealed the shocking statistic following an alcohol awareness week in which staff from Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Doncaster Alcohol Service hosted a display in the Out-patient Department at DRI giving advice to residents.
This year’s theme is to encourage conversations about the health risks, social problems, stigmas and taboos associated with talking about the dangers of alcohol.
Some of the worrying statistics revealed around 200,000 people come to work with a hangover every day and over 45s are three times more likely to drink alcohol every day.
Kirsty Clarke, matron for acute medicine at Doncaster & Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “In partnership with the local public health team, we will be carrying out some joint awareness-raising sessions over the year and also working together on more long-term solutions to address alcohol misuse.
“As part of that, we will be highlighting the importance of early screening and intervention for patients accessing hospital services, whether as inpatients or outpatients.”
Sandra Hardy from DAS said: “At DAS we understand that individuals are unique and that everyone’s situation is different.
“We can help by listening to your needs and offering information, support and a range of services to those affected by their own or someone else’s drinking.”
DAS hold drop-in assessment mornings on Tuesdays and Thursday mornings from 9.30am to 12pm and a Family Support Group runs on Monday evenings from 7pm to 9pm at their offices at 19 Hallgate, Doncaster or contact 01302 368705.
