A wheely great award for Jon
PARALYMPIC bronze medallist Jon Hall has received a Discover the Spirit of Doncaster award for his superb display for Great Britain's wheelchair basketball squad in Beijing.
In his first ever Paralympic Games, Norton-born Jon was instrumental for Team GB as they finished third in the 2008 Games – which included two impressive wins over the USA.
Now living in Chesterfield, the 26-year-old has recently signed a one-year contract to shoot hoops for Super League side Wolverhampton Rhinos, after transferring from Sheffield Steelers.
And despite training hard to impress his new club, the star point guard took time out to come back to his hometown and collect the award from Mayor Martin Winter, at the Mansion House.
Mayor Winter said: "Jon deserves the utmost recognition for a real achievement during his paralympic debut.
"I am proud of his success in bringing home a bronze medal, having chalked up 37 points as his contribution to a great team effort throughout the tournament.
"Jon is an incredible role model – only too happy to play his part in inspiring possible future Olympians and budding athletes from Doncaster."
The former Campsmount Technology College pupil was also part of the GB team which won a silver medal at the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester and has featured regularly as an international since first appearing at youth level.
He was also recently crowned Disability Sports Personality of the Year at The Star and St John Sports Awards, co-run by our sister paper The Star and the St John Ambulance Brigade.
