A 19-YEAR-OLD man who was a passenger in a car involved in a police chase has died from his injuries.

The man was a passenger in a stolen red Peugeot 306 being pursued by police after failing to stop in Thorne.

The driver of the Peugeot, Andrew McMinn, 19, is due to be charged in connection with the incident and is due to appear at Doncaster Magistrates Court this afternoon.

An internal inquiry has been launched into what happened in the lead up to the crash in Station Road, Stainforth on Monday at 1pm.

The Hatfield-bound Peugeot ploughed head-on into a yellow JCB tractor 100 yards off Emerson Avenue.

The driver, a 19-year-old man, was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary with a suspected fractured wrist, cuts and bruises. He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking.

His passenger suffered a head injury and was airlifted to Leeds General, where he died at 4.25pm yesterday.

A force spokesman confirmed the issue was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission as a matter of routine but the IPCC has ruled the crash should be investigated by South Yorkshire officers.

The driver of the JCB was not injured. Three police officers sustained minor injuries from an earlier incident during the pursuit.

Anyone who witnessed the manner of driving of any vehicle, prior to the collision, or anyone with further information, should contact the police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
