Doncaster is geared up for a double employment boost after two business developments were given the green light.
Planners yesterday gave the go-ahead to proposals to convert the former Miller Brothers electrical store near Sandall Park into a furniture store creating up to 20 jobs, while permission for a business park off the West Moor Link at Armthorpe was also granted.
The iconic Shaw Lane building has been vacant for more than five years since the business closed in 2009, but is to be taken over by family firm The Furniture Barn which specialises in large furniture items.
The premises, directly opposite Sandall Park, has fallen into disrepair since Miller Brothers went into administration, with more than 100 people being made redundant and bringing to an end its long history in the town.
The plans include changes to the ground and first floor, installation of mezzanine floors and alterations to the outside of the building.
The Furniture Barn specialises in items such as wardrobes, tables and chests of drawers.
Tthe Doncaster store will be the firm’s fifth branch, after it was founded in Leicestershire. It is due to open in August.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, plans to create a 12-hectare business park a stone’s throw from the M18 at Armthorpe were also given the go-ahead.
Lazarus Properties has been given permission to develop 240,000 square feet of industrial and commercial floor space just off the A630.
The finished warehouses are likely to be used for storage and distribution with access to and from the site from the West Moor Link.
Armthorpe Parish Council had objected to the plans, describing it as offering ‘no major benefit to the village of Armthorpe’.
Tony McAteer, of McAteer Associates, who spoke in favour of the proposal at the Planning Committee meeting at the council’s Civic Offices, said: “The proposed development of the site for employment uses has already seen a number of clients interested in taking up the site.”
It is not known how many jobs will be created by the development.
