Doncaster fun day to help kids charity could end in a party

Hundreds turned out to a summer fun day - and the organisers reckon that can only be good news for children's charities.

Residents of Larch Avenue, Auckley, set up a family fun day at the Parklands Club, on Wheatley Hall Road, after signing up for a competition to raise cash run by radio station Hallam FM.

If they win, they get treated to a street party - but that is not important, according to single mum Jody Dews, who is one of the organisers of the party.

Hers is one of a number of streets involved in the competition, the Cash for Kids Challenge.

Among the others is Windmill Balk Lane, in Woodlands.

The fun day at the Parklands included a fun fair, stalls, tombola and children’s activities and classic car event.

Jody said: “The first prize is a street party for all the neighbours, but to be honest, we’ve done this for the children.

“I’ve got three children, and they have all been in Sheffield Children’s Hospital at one time or another, and I understand that is one of the organisations which will receive money.

“It was great. We had several hundred people at our event, so we were delighted about that.

“We had a great time with the fun fairs, and the Black Cat Theatre Group, who are based in Doncaster, came to help us too. They were brilliant.”

She said competition rules meant she could not reveal how much money they raised until the contest was over.

It is due to finish on July 31, and the fun day was the latest in a series of events.
